THE FINANCIAL CRISIS

The financial shit has hit the fan. Finally what the Australian Financial Review describes as a "decade of reckless lending" by banks, overblown asset prices all over the world have come crashing down in the biggest financial meltdown we've seen in ages. We've got Cameron Clyne who is the CEO designate of Australia's NAB banking group live on Sunday on the implications. But it's hard to see how this country can remain unaffected. Already share prices are down. Surely real estate must also take a bigger tumble. All of this must impact on the election. Will the rush to safety mean voters go back to Labour, the devil they know or will National's strong emphasis on economic management skills prevail? Would it be responsible to cut taxes next year? Should a future Government borrow more? Does the Reserve Bank Act need changing so the Bank can smooth economic cycles and thus prevent the excesses we're seeing at present? These are suddenly now centre stage political issues. We're going to try and get Michael Cullen and Bill English on together to debate these issues as soon as we can.
